Redefining Leadership in the Digital Era

What does it mean by a ‘great leader’ in the digital era?

The modern world has undergone a dramatic transition toward the digital era. To keep up with the changes occurring everywhere, enterprises must emphasize more on digital transformation. Digital transformation can be frightening and bewildering. Nonetheless, adaption becomes easy if the ‘great leaders’ are certain about the changes and how they will benefit everyone.

Digital Era Requires Digital Leader

The following factors determine the new concept of leadership in the 21st century.

  • Technology has transformed the business environment Thus, the ultimate goal of all businesses is to develop products/services that meet customers’ expectations.
  • Businesses will strive to be globally competitive, while customers expect high quality. The pricing, quality, and productivity must match with the leaders.

Effective corporate governance practices will be necessary. Shareholder expectations and goals must be balanced in the business plan. Leaders will increasingly realize that managing business means also managing technology and knowledge society.

To address these changes, digital leaders will need to be a visionary, change-agent, change-leader, knowledge manager, and technology owner, who will develop vision and provide strategies to support it.

Leadership in the Digital Era focuses on innovation and growth

Digital leaders view their business in a new context, creating new chances for growth and innovation. Digital leaders take advantage of the new intelligence, speed, and capabilities available to interact in new ways, from decision-making to rapid development, smarter logistical networks, and brand involvement. New business models, which reimagine how the business operates both internally and externally with new offerings, new revenue sources, and new methods to win, are the focuses of digital leaders.

It also focuses on building a strong horizontal network of competence

In this digital era, we must focus on creating a strong horizontal network of competence. Self-organizing teams with the autonomy to decide their own path toward the intended objectives are encouraged by this style of leadership. Digital leaders’s success depends on how well they can establish trust with their team members. These leaders can also lead during times of transition or uncertainty because they are more adaptable and flexible in their approach.
